And that, far from stopping, each one gives access to a new area. Shortly after starting you will find yourself with the same dilemma of the two paths, only instead of a blockage, you will discover that it is possible to continue advancing on both. Hollow Knight has that world and it’s called Hallownest. But to define it that way would be doing Hollow Knight a disservice, because we are talking about the game that best represents this style It is the most ‘metroidavnia’ ‘metroidvania’ ever made. While at first the grueling distance between checkpoints and the painful punishment for perishing seemed unfair, it eventually clicked. Dying on the repeat trip forfeits your hard-earned cash, an unthinkable option. Falling in battle breaks the Hollow Knight in two, leaving its money and part of its magic meter behind. Even basic enemies posed a threat while platforming, and repeating large sections between checkpoints and bosses demanded mastery. The heart-pounding tension between checkpoints kept me on my toes. Most of the adorable hand-drawn bugs shone an orange gleam from their eyes, a telltale sign of the infection spreading throughout the Hollownest.
